Padang Bai is the ferry port for the ships which ply the 13,000+ islands of the Indonesian Archipelago and the Lombok ferry terminates here.  It is also the port from which the dive boats service the varied dive sites of Amuk Bay and Candidasa.  Wally reports that in the algae in the shallows off the beach at the end of the road here, several colonies of seahorses are in residence!

The North side of Amuk Bay provides shallow and mid depth diving to about 20m.  At the south of the drift the steep drop off and sandy bottom signify the Blue Lagoon site which is always plentifully supplied with a wide variety of marine life.

Of particular interest and little more than a large rock standing proud of the water, Gili Tepekong with it's strong Lombok straits currents and exciting terrain, attracts huge schools of hungry fish from the ocean deeps.

Gili Mimpang
Gili Mimpang, a group of 3 'medium rocks', with bottom depths of between 12m and 30m.  It can get very cold at depths over 20m around here and the best diving is to be had above this depth.  There is a wildly vivacious reef here and the marine life is profuse and varied.  At the greater depths which this site has to offer, Reef Shark and large pelagic species are reliable and frequent visitors. Again, this is not a site for the novice as the currents can be fairly strong and the cold waters off-putting if your major focus is simply getting used to being in the water..
