Without the loving attention of Gloria Goodwin it is unlikely that Dhani would have survived his second stay in hospital, roughly 2 months after the initial accident. It was by chance that Gloria was visiting another patient when she became aware that Dhani was in urgent need of assistance in the ICU. Thank you Gloria for your courage and determination in the face of adversity! We Salute You! |

The Hidden Tragedies of Dhani's Life - A Message from Gloria May '08 |
|
Many families have suffered the domino effect of a tragic accident and Dhani and his family are no exception. The collapse of the happy life they knew before the accident has taken its toll. There is marital strain and issues of self esteem with Dhani and his father Achmad, stress associated with inability to function as ‘normal’ human beings. Inability to earn a wage adds to the demise. Incapacity due to the loss of Achmad's leg, desperate feelings of guilt and despair, guilt at Dhani's horrific injuries, despair at looking, everyday, at the scars which reinforce that tragic moment which nearly took their lives. Our work with this sad family is not just about “corrective” surgery for Dhani or finding a prosthetic leg for Achmad, it’s about salvaging a semblance of normality in every way we can. In effect, this means lot of support, counseling, social aid and tender loving care. How can we start? Firstly it would be wonderful to stop the “finger pointing” and the shocked “looks”-this is a task which will take time-as Dhani's numerous operations correct the scars and deformities, the reactions of people around him will hopefully diminish. Achmad needs an artificial leg to give him mobility and independence, a big step up for his self esteem. With the added mobility, he may have a chance at earning an income: another step up for his trouble mind. Another plus would be a replacement motor bike for the one lost in the inferno which followed the accident. (An automatic could be purchased 2nd hand). The freedom afforded with another motor bike could release him and Dhani from their “incarceration” and allow them am almost normal father/son relationship and could even provide employment. Crisis care staff will continue with counseling and after care for Dhani (post up) and the on-going tender loving care will aid their psychological physical comfort, with your continued support, recovery will happen, slowly but surely. |

| Yesterday little Danny and his mum came to visit us at our clinic. I was out on another mission at the time but my staff called me on my mobile phone and asked me to come back in... As I got out of the car little Danny ran towards me and threw his arms around me....what a wonderful child he is...He is now running around like a normal 6 year old...and showed me all his terrible scars so I could take some photos for the Plastic Surgeon to look at. His arms and leg and chest are healed but of course scarred...but his little face is taking some time...as it was his face that was more seriously burned in the accident. His little ears are deformed but operable...his mouth is the same and his hands will require several operations to correct the constriction problems...but..I am confident we can put him back together again with the help of the "Smile" team....This child, despite what a terrible ordeal he has been through, has the most beautiful nature...one example of that was when he realised how tired I was, he sat me down, went behind me and massaged my shoulders with his tiny deformed hands...told me he wants to be a doctor when he gets bigger...and...asked me to marry him...!!! we hugged and hugged as if we didn't want to let go...it was so special. Next month he will see our wonderful specialists from Adelaide Australia to see what can be done to help him further....I have such a wonderful life and it is a privilege to know and love Danny and his family...thank you God.. | |
